Just a few short years ago, the answer was mostly in the negative. That fact is changing almost faster than it is possible to keep up.

There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but the main one is that schools, states, and companies have figured out a way to use public money to create online high schools and online courses. All perfectly legal and a reasonable use of our tax dollars.

However, before you decide to sign up for that free online high school, there are some things that you need to know.

Lee County Public Schools will launch a full-time, K-12 Virtual Instruction program for the 2009/10 school year, according to Al Shilling, assistant director or emerging technology and virtual education. This is another option for students to complete their education in Lee County.

The Lee Virtual Instruction Program (LVIP) is governed by Florida Statutes 1002.45, which created the option for students to attend State-approved virtual programs as part of the School Choice initiative Shilling said.

To be eligible for the program, students must:

Have been enrolled the prior school year in a Florida public school;

Be the dependent of a member of the military who was transferred in the last 12 months;

or been enrolled and successfully completed one of the State-approved virtual programs.

House and Senate Democrats agreed this afternoon on compromise wording for a timeout on the growth of statewide online schools that makes clear existing schools can keep operating at their current sizes for two more years.

Republicans still disagree strongly that any timeout is needed. The full House and Senate must agree to the new language before adjournment if the moratorium on growth is to take effect.

Families of nearly 4,000 students who attend online schools, including Oregon Connections Academy and Oregon Virtual Academy, have been watching the proposed timeout with trepidation that it was a veiled attempt to close down their schools.

Original language in the bill, Senate Bill 767, would have done more to restrict operations of the popular online schools, which allow students to learn at home under parent supervision using nationally developed online curriculum.
