The Chino Valley Unified School District on Thursday decided to enter the second decade of the 21st century by opening its first “virtual” high school.

The Chino Valley Virtual High School will be located at the shuttered Los Serranos Elementary School, one of three schools the district closed in 2009 partly due to budget cuts.

The virtual school – the district’s eighth high school – will be dedicated to an online multimedia curriculum. Students will be able learn via the Internet from home and on a personalized schedule.

“Young people are receiving input with the technology in every avenue of their lives, not just in education,” said Michael Vaughn, district director of alternative education. “Now, we can truly use it as a method of instructional strategy.”

The school’s initial enrollment is expected to be about 450 students.

Revenue potential for the school could be nearly $1 million a year. About 200 students may re-enroll in Chino Valley Unified after leaving for virtual educational programs offered by other districts, school officials said.
