Karly Johnson of Alamogordo earned a spot on the New Mexico state high school rodeo team and will compete at the 61st annual National High School Finals Rodeo, which will be held July 19-25 in Farmington. Johnson, a junior with Dora Cyber High School, qualified in the breakaway roping and barrel racing events.
Featuring more than 1,500 participants from 41 states and parts of Canada and Australia, the National High School Finals Rodeo is the largest rodeo in the world, according to a press release. Contestants will be vying for more than $325,000 in college scholarships, $200,000 in other prizes, as well as national champions, the release stated.
During competition, contestants must finish in the top 25 after two go-rounds before advancing to July 25 championship rounds.
